1 in 3 American adults are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. However, 81% of American adults with prediabetes are unaware of their condition. The good news is that these odds aren’t set in stone. One of the first steps in preventing diabetes is assessing your risk. There are a few different ways you can determine your risk for diabetes. Read on to find the right starting point for you.

What are some common diabetes risk factors?

When determining if someone is at risk for diabetes, medical professionals will look at various factors that may increase their chances, including:

  • You have prediabetes
  • A higher BMI (body mass index)
  • You’re 45 years or older
  • Family members have diabetes
  • Physically inactive
  • You’ve had gestational diabetes

This blog post takes a deeper dive into how and why these are risk factors for diabetes. Connect with your doctor or the 9amHealth Care Team if any of these concern you.

Determine your risk today

If you think you may be at risk for diabetes—or you’re just not sure where to start—the American Diabetes Association has a convenient way to begin the conversation. Take the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test to determine if you are at low, medium, or high risk for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. After getting your result, you’ll be given the option to be directed to 9amHealth, where we will help you confirm your health status, starting with an A1c test.

How an A1c test works

An A1c test is a blood draw that measures your average blood glucose (blood sugar) level of the past 90 days and determines if it is in range for prediabetes or diabetes. Typically taken every 3–6 months if you have diabetes and once or twice yearly when you have prediabetes, the A1c test is one of the most common ways to stay on top of your blood glucose levels.

9amHealth offers a few different ways to complete your A1c test, all on your schedule:

  • At-home labs: A medical specialist comes to your location of choice to complete your lab. Or we'll send you a lab kit with a Tasso+ blood collection device. It all depends on where you live.
  • Lab visit: Schedule an appointment at a lab near you.

A 9amHealth Care Team member will help you determine which option is right for you.

Within a few days of collecting your sample, you’ll receive your results securely through your 9am account, and a member of the Care Team will reach out with next steps and a personalized plan for you.
